Lawangsewu, Semarang: thousand window with a thousand story

   
Lawang Sewu is an ancient historical building for Semarang.It is becoming train museum for the city. It has 3 floors; first floor, second, and basement or under ground area. First and second floor is for exhibite things related to train, and the basement is empty, but long time ago the first used to administration office, second floor was used to dormitory, party and dancing for the Dutch, and the basement was used keep water for giving some fresh air to the building.
     It was built by Dutch in 1904 and was finished in 1907. Before constructing this building, the architecture of lawang sewu was designed in Nederland by Dutch in 1903. This building is called lawang sewu because of the number of the window. They are not normal one. It is big high window that for indonesian they look like door so it is called lawang sewu. Lawang means door and sewu means a thousand, but in fact this building doesnt have thousand door. it is 250. the word sewu or thousand is used to say that it is so many.
     Long time ago, lawang sewu was used for the office of Nederlands-Indische Spoorweg Maatchappij or NIS or Dutch train company. First, Dutchman was build the railway from Semarang-Surakarta and Semarang-Yogyakarta. And to controlled the administration and visitors, they build Lawang sewu as an office. By visiting this building,you can see how Dutch they built our railway starting from sumatra to java.
     Many local tourist is coming to see the building especially on the weekend. They are doing their visit to experience their spiritual life. There is a belief that says when semarang was occupied by japanese,lawang sewu was used by them to torture the prisoners till dead,and the dead was dumped by the canal and ended in the river.The prison area was in under ground of lawang sewu. For those who believe in spirits,they see that the spirit are staying in that area.
